Alleged Bondi Beach Attackers Acted Alone and Did Not Instruction in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities Say.
The pair of accused attackers responsible for the lethal incident at a Hanukkah gathering on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, reportedly operated independently, as stated by Australian authorities.
Authorities also confirmed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his son Naveed Akram flew to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans included landing in the main city Manila before transiting on the day of arrival to Davao City. The father and son returned to Sydney on 29 November.
Lack of Proof of Preparation During Trip
Investigators have stated the individuals did not partake in any form of attack-related training or "organizing" during their time in the Philippines. Initial findings from local authorities point to they "mostly stayed in" their accommodation.
The incident—labeled as Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996—has been officially classified as a act of terrorism.
"We are actively analyzing the evidence," she said, noting that early assessments suggest that "the alleged offenders are believed to have acted alone."
National law enforcement Chief Krissy Barrett briefed the press on Tuesday that CCTV footage showing the accused attackers' activities in the Philippines had been provided to domestic authorities.
"Our investigation shows no evidence to suggest these suspects were members of a wider network, or were instructed by overseas entities to carry out an incident," the police chief stated.
Yet, the duo were also not necessarily in the Philippines as tourists, she added. She emphasized that, as the inquiry is continuing, additional details may surface.
Inspiration and Court Proceedings
In prior statements, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese remarked it seems both accused attackers were "motivated by the so-called Islamic State" extremist views.
During the incident, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—both armed with firearms—are accused of having opened fire on attendees at the Hanukkah event.
Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been formally accused of 59 charges. These encompass 15 charges of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. He is due to face court in April.
Travel Particulars
In the aftermath following the shooting, immigration authorities in the Philippines stated that the older suspect had entered the country using an Indian passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.
The duo had listed the metropolis of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their scheduled return flight to Australia was for Sydney.
Davao is a large metropolis on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary island in the south. Historically, Militant militants have reportedly operate in impoverished parts of southern and western Mindanao.
