On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Various sections of the city recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents ten times the safe threshold established by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable levels.

Fireworks Ban and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless recently, the current regional administration approached the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Many recording stations throughout Delhi recorded contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during celebrations in at least three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Near Diwali, the levels of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air arrives.

Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature fatalities per year in Delhi.
