I believed I nicked it - Carey on review reprieve.

Australia gloveman Alex Carey revealed he believed he had feathered the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System on day one of the third Ashes Test against the English.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey went on to make a fine 106 to aid the Australians post 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.

The Incident

Australia were 245-6 when Carey looked to play a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

The England team were convinced they had a wicket, thinking they had heard an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza gave it not out.

Following skipper Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the replay reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a significant spike however this came before the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney also said he believed there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was allowed to continue.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," commented Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Technology Debate

There has been debate about 'Snicko'' throughout the series after a series of inconclusive calls.

England's bowling coach David Saker suggested the touring side may escalate this most recent incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's the situation."

Emotional Century

Carey's century was his maiden in Test cricket against England.

This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a intense final day.

On his reprieve he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
