Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in the past few months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the conflict.
