Los Angeles Faces Historic High Temperatures Just Days After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring heavy downpours that caused flooding across parts of the city, LA is now grappling with unseasonably hot weather for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Heat
During the day Friday, the thermometer soared to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in central LA, according to the National Weather Service. This easily surpasses the prior high for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on forecast charts for the region.
Safety Warnings
The weather service cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Sharp Reversal
This dramatic increase in heat comes on the heels of a intense winter storm that battered the region last week. That storm brought high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to higher elevations, triggering flash flood warnings for millions residents.
Tragically, the conditions also resulted in a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is expected. Temperatures were predicted to decrease to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by late Friday.
Several cities that hit the 90-degree mark featured Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to see the upper eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can anticipate weather in the 80s, with cooler weather likely for the following week.
