Mikel Arteta Concedes Extended Role Hinges on Lifting Trophies.
Ahead of marking his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.
The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era
The Spanish coach assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. However, that initial silverware stands as his lone major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” he stated when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the coming months as well to earn the right.”
He will mark the landmark with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal faced the day after his hiring was confirmed.
Present Challenges
With trailing Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.
He currently has a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver in the immediate future.
Earning the Right
He went on to explain, highlighting the constant necessity to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”
He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”
Squad Setbacks
The squad heads into the Everton match dealing with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks.
Confidence in the Path
Regardless of the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.
The manager referenced the team's performances as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”
Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
