Forecasters have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be low, so warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather could to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is absolutely essential.
