Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
