Iran is prepared to reinitiate atomic discussions with the United States on condition that it is treated with "dignity" and "honor", Tehran's foreign minister has announced.

The Iranian diplomat stated only diplomacy worked, and shared fresh requests had originated from go-betweens to restart talks with the American leadership. He claimed Iran did not have undeclared nuclear sites, and Iran was not yet able to permit the UN nuclear inspectorate to inspect bombed nuclear sites for security reasons.

Navigating a Difficult Path

The foreign minister is walking a challenging course since Iran does not want be perceived to be operating from a position of disadvantage, and he consistently maintained that Iran had come out stronger militarily and mentally from the Israeli-US attack on its atomic facilities in June.

He was speaking at a security conference in Tehran where he reaffirmed that Iran had "an inalienable right to process nuclear material within its borders that it will perpetually retain" – the main reason of the stalemate in the prior discussions.

Earlier Talks Abruptly Ended

The previous five rounds of negotiations between the US and Iran were ended suddenly and acrimonious conclusion on 12 June when the Israeli government, with US support, struck Iranian nuclear sites in a two-week conflict that ended with the American leader declaring the facilities had been eliminated. Afterward, Western states exercised their authority to reinstate international penalties, but Iran insists they have not had a significant effect.

Perfect Agreement Proposed

Iranian officials stated they felt they had attained a "ideal resolution" to the uranium processing matter in prior discussions, when it was settled an domestic cooperative with US participation could refine atomic fuel. Each party would have been able to declare success since local refinement would have persisted and the US could be assured that Iran's nuclear programme was entirely non-military.
