Just prior to he was crowned, a trepidatious worry flashed through Rory McIlroy's mind. He revealed he was concerned, "Please don't let it be a racing champion again."

"It's been a great night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was recognized in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can capitalize on that."

On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The verdict was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to reflect on a memorable evening for both himself and the team winners, who were honored as team of the year.

A Whirlwind Schedule

But rather than celebrate at the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already thinking about his next sporting adventure. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to Florida.

"I've had a whirlwind 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

That said, McIlroy stated he has no intention to slow down, even after completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a few good years in me," he claimed.

"Further big titles, season-long rankings, team competitions, that's the target. But provided that you feel like you can keep improving and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Team Triumph

Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also applauded golf's exceptional night and his great friend's individual success.

"These become the memories that will live with us indefinitely so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is really cool," he commented. "And to be there Rory receive that award, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Future Goals

His goal is to secure his first major next year but he recognized McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to work on," he noted.

Football Loyalty

As he was leaving, an additional topic arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be convinced to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"Provided that they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a laugh. "Improvements are being made. There's a little bit of optimism around."

On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that he is seeing the upside.
