While Beachgoers Escaped Attack, Viral Photo Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned coast as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, like many neighbors, detected cracking sounds reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. She left her apartment, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the slope in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a rescuer, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and without footwear … He moved at something that surely every instinct would instruct you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many those hurt.

Collective Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the local area, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the attack serving as a temporary medical station. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the water to rescue people needing help.

After the tragedy, statements of support flooded in. An online statement shared gratitude for the lifeguards who showed that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.

The team of rescuers later shared a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our team,” the group wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the incident started right into late that evening.

“There have been so many moving accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“The team show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores safe for the public, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
